There's always one. Whether he's tall, dark and handsome or a little on the dorky side with a subtle air of mystery, it's a rite of passage for a high school girl to get a cheeks-flushed, butterflies-in-stomach, life-ruining crush on a teacher. For 17 year old Lori Garnet, that teacher was none other than Mark Hanna, whose senior-level 7th period English class was the only reason she came to school at all. Completely entranced by him, Lori would slide low in her seat and keep a running tally of all the times he smiled at her in the upper right-hand corner of her notebook paper. She would never speak of this habit until 1991, when the two would meet again at a party thrown by mutual friends of their families. Lori had just returned from a failed stint at the Moore College of Art and Design in Philadelphia, where she'd exhibited erratic behavior, loss of focus and promiscuity that would later be attributed to undiagnosed bipolar disorder. The two were immediately entangled in a torrid affair, with one slight hiccup -- Mark was already married. A few weeks before she was to start nursing classes at a Denver community college, Lori discovered she was pregnant. When Mark refused to take responsibility, Lori ended their affair. She left college again a couple months after her daughter, Jesh Olivia, was born, unable to balance the course load with being a single mother.
Jesh and Lori lived with her bewildered grandparents, with Lori working full time at a nursing home while her mother cared for the baby, constantly questioning the baby's paternity. After a health scare, Lori's mother pressured her even harder to reveal the name of the baby's father, citing the need for medical history as reason enough for the big reveal. When Mark was named, gossip traveled between their outraged families, with Mark none the wiser. He'd already begun the required separation from his wife that would lead to divorce. Once it was finalized, he invited Lori to live with him so the two could raise Jesh together. After living as roommates for several months, each dating other people, Lori and Mark reconciled. When they were married a year later, Lori gave Jesh her father's last name. When Jesh started preschool, Lori began a program at the Denver School of Massage Therapy, where she sought certification as a Licensed Reiki Master while Mark began taking classes in Administration with hopes to become a high school principal to generate more income for the family. He finished when Jesh was in 2nd grade, eventually hired as Assistant Principal by Fairview High School in Boulder. Soon after, the entire family relocated to be closer to the school. Lori found a business partner who helped her open a holistic healing facility and day spa in Boulder, where she specializes in deep tissue, Swedish, and hot stone massages, aromatherapy, Reiki healing, life coaching, ear candling, and music and art therapy. Jesh worked there as a receptionist during her junior and senior years of high school.
Despite her father being the principal, Jesh was decently popular and active in all of the student publications, accepting positions as Copy Editor and eventually Editor-in-Chief of the newspaper, Editor of the Student Life section of the yearbook and Art Director for the literary magazine. It was assumed that she would pursue a career in journalism, so it was a surprise when she decided to pursue a double major in Advertising and Design at the University of Texas at Austin instead. During her time in college, she started an online music magazine, which featured news, album reviews, interviews and photographs from shows in the greater Austin area. Eventually, she recruited other students to help with content generation, branching into other genres of coverage, which lead to some interest by SXSW in recruiting her for an internship during the fall semester of 2013. She was hired part time after the semester came to a close, helping with booking and promotions while she interned for Factory Design Labs her senior year. Upon graduation, she decided to move back to Denver, accepting a full time position with Factory Labs as a copywriter.
She's been back in Denver since June, living alone in a modern bungalow with two bedrooms to rent out on AirBnB for extra income. She accepted a promotion to Client Strategist for FDL in December of 2014.
